James Iredell
Father, Near the End
The heater came on in April
when weather should be warm.
But the chill outside was still
winter. And the crack of ice
deep in the desert wells
sounded before the storm,
before whisky and pills,
before he grew thin, marbled skin,
and painted his words in rye breath,
his cries choked, then nothing left.
James Iredell is the author of Before I Moved to Nevada (Publishing Genius Press), When I Moved to Nevada (The Greying Ghost Press), and Atlanta (Paper Hero Press).
